We live in an era of rigorous cybersecurity. We use complex passwords, enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), and jump through hoops just to log into our accounts. Yet, every time we open our email, we are greeted by a flood of junk, and mundane requests.
If we have to prove who we are to log in, why can’t our email providers just stop the spam? And how is it possible that even brand-new, unused email addresses get targeted almost instantly? I find myself fielding email after email of junk or very useless content that does not even pertain to me.
*The Security Disconnect: Authentication vs. Inbox Access
The frustration comes down to confusing two different concepts:
MFA is a Deadbolt: It acts as a gatekeeper for access, confirming you are the legitimate user to stop account takeovers.
Email is a Public Address: Email protocols were designed as an open system (like physical mail). If someone has your address, they can drop a letter in your box regardless of how secure your login process is. So annoying!
*How Spammers Find You (Even on Day One)
Your email address is effectively public property due to a few common culprits:
Algorithmic Guesswork (Dictionary Attacks): Bots blast common name combinations (e.g., john.smith@gmail.com) to major domains. If it doesn't bounce, they know they have a live inbox.
Recycled Addresses: If your email address was previously used and deleted by someone else, you inherit their old mailing lists and data breach history. Mine are pretty much brand new, again so annoying!
Data Breaches & Scraping: Your address was leaked from a third-party site hack, or harvested from a contact list on an infected device.
*How to Reclaim Your Inbox
Since you cannot delete your email address from the internet, focus on defense:
Use Email Aliases: Tools like SimpleLogin or Firefox Relay create "burner" addresses for new accounts. If an alias starts receiving spam, you can simply deactivate it.
Don't "Unsubscribe" from Spam: Clicking unsubscribe in a suspicious email confirms your address is active, leading to more junk.
Let the Filters Learn: Use the Report Spam button religiously to train your provider’s AI filters. Treat MFA as your account's deadbolt, and your inbox with absolute skepticism.
